A Woman Assumes a Man

A woman assumes a man
She puts him on like a coat
Against the elements

She doesn't look up to see
That water dripping on the front step
Means the gutter has pulled away

Or need to know
A squeak at the door
Says the hinge needs oil

She knows an ache
In the lower back
Needs strong wrists

A cup of coffee
Made just right for her
Follows a Sunday nap

She keeps his shoulder
Between her and the storm
Outside the window
